| About Mylar® and 3M™
Scotchcal™ Mylar® is the brand name of a strong polyester film that grew out of the development of Dacron® in the early 1950s, and is registered trademark of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company or its affiliates. These graphic marking films are dimensionally stable with a clear, permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive. Mylar® decals are characterized by a rectangular (or square) clear background. These decals are applied using the peel and stick method. Scotchcal™ is the trademark name of a graphic film product from 3M, generally referred to as vinyl. |
| About vinyl Vinyl is a durable, general purpose film, a little thicker than polyester (Mylar), and more expensive. These decals are applied using the peel and stick method. |
| About vinyl "cut" Vinyl decals of this type are precisely "cut" around the letters. These decals are applied using a two-step process. First the decal is positioned, similar to the peel and stick method. Second, the backing is removed, leaving only the individual vinyl letters. Vinyl cut decals avoid the bumper sticker look of mylar, but do not accurately reflect early Cub tractor hood decals. |
| Fonts and Color For many decals, the original specific size and style of the typeface is difficult, or impossible, to determine. Similarly, background and text color vary throughout the years. International Harvester used several different companies to produce their decals, and even within a short period, decals were noticeably different. | Water transfer Water transfer, or water slide decals, are generally printed face up and rely on the dextrose corn sugar residue from the decal paper to bond the decal transfer to a surface. Some, but not all, of the original decals were water transfer. Reproduction water transfer decals for the McCormick Farmall Cub, International Cub, and International Lo-Boy are not available at this time from licensed suppliers. |
